Ontario Open Sports-Betting Market: A Year in Review
Ontario’s open sports-betting market has had a remarkable first year. iGaming Ontario, Canada’s first open, regulated iGaming market, announced on Tuesday that the province had generated about $35.6 billion in total wagers and approximately $1.4 billion in total gaming revenue. This makes Ontario one of North America’s top five igaming jurisdictions.
Since launching last April, over 1.6 million player accounts have been active on more than 40 operators’ websites that have agreements with iGaming Ontario. The average monthly spend per active player account over the last year is about $70.
According to a survey conducted by Ipsos last month and released by the Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario (AGCO), about 85% of respondents who gambled online in Ontario over the past three months did so on regulated sites.
Basketball was the most preferred sport among bettors. It accounted for 28% of wagers, followed by soccer (15%), football (14%), hockey (9%) and baseball (8%).
Nearly, 48% of all casino wagers were on slots, 32% were on table games with a live dealer, and the remaining 19% on computer-based table games.
As of now, there are currently 45 operators actively operating in Ontario, and the AGCO has approved over 5,000 certified games for use in the province.
It’s impressive to see that Ontario’s open sports-betting market has grown so much in just a year, with thousands of games, dozens of operators and millions of active player accounts. We can only expect this trend to continue to soar as more and more bettors join the action.
