Trump ensures record bookmaker revenue
Players can currently guess who will win the presidential election. According to bookmakers’ betting odds, this could very likely be Donald Trump again (odds of 1.9 on average).
In comparison: the odds for Joe Biden are 2.25, those for Bernie Sanders even 30.
Mathew Shaddick, head of the Political Betting Department at Ladbrokes Coral Group, expects Trump bets to be particularly successful this year:
In principle, presidential elections are a good binary option – there are complicated parliamentary processes in European elections. But Trump is such a well-known and controversial figure. The 2020 US election will undoubtedly be the next big hit. All of the money we earn clearly shows me that we will break all records.
In view of the yawning emptiness of ordinary sports betting, however, the political bets are becoming more and more curious. For example, some bookmakers offered bets on how often Trump would use the term “chinese virus” in his tweets.
There are no limits to creativity
There were bets on political events long before the Corona crisis. However, bookmakers are currently devising the most absurd bets in their need. Many of them relate to direct or indirect consequences of the pandemic. Including:
- When will the schools open again?
- How are nitrogen dioxide levels developing in London?
- When will British Airways offer flights to China again?
- How high will Netflix stock rise given the curfews?
Since such bets are well received by many people due to their curiosity, it seems conceivable that they will still be offered after the sports leagues have resumed.
